What boxboard actually is
Boxboard is a single solid sheet of pressed paper fiber. There is no wavy flute inside, so the surface is flat and smooth from edge to edge.
We offer it in 18, 20 and 24 pt thickness. A point is one thousandth of an inch, so 24 pt is a little under a millimeter thick.
That thin, flat sheet is why boxboard prints so well. Fine lines, small text and photos all come out cleaner than on corrugated.
Boxboard is also lighter than corrugated of the same size. On small parcels, that weight saving can help keep postage down.
Our corrugated versus paperboard comparison explains the trade-off between print quality and strength in more detail.
Products that suit a boxboard mailer
Boxboard is the right choice when the product is light and the box is part of the product experience. Weight and fragility are the two questions to ask.
These are the items we pack in boxboard most often.
Items that are heavy for their size, such as glass jars or metal tools, belong in corrugated. Boxboard bends under concentrated weight.
- Lipsticks, serums, compacts and other small cosmetics.
- Jewelry, watches and hair accessories.
- Loose tea, coffee sachets and chocolate bars.
- Greeting cards, stickers and stationery sets.
- Socks, ties and folded scarves.
- Inner gift boxes that ship inside a larger carton.
Choosing 18, 20 or 24 pt
Thicker board feels stiffer in the hand and holds its shape better. Thinner board folds more neatly on very small boxes.
The table gives a starting point. We confirm the right thickness on your quote once we know the product size and weight.
If you cannot decide, ask for a blank sample in two thicknesses. Fold both, put your product inside and see which one feels right.
| Thickness | Feel | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 18 pt | Light and flexible | Cards, sachets, very small boxes |
| 20 pt | Firm with neat folds | Cosmetics, jewelry, tea |
| 24 pt | Stiff and solid | Larger gift boxes, heavier small items |
SBS white or kraft boxboard
SBS stands for solid bleached sulfate. It is bright white all the way through, which makes colors look clean and true.
Kraft boxboard is brown and has a natural, slightly textured surface. It suits handmade, organic and minimal brands.
On kraft, we can print white ink as a base so lighter colors still show. Without white ink, light colors fade into the brown.
White SBS also makes inside printing pop. A bright interior with a short message is easy to read the moment the lid opens.

Styles that work in paperboard
A tuck top box opens from the top like a retail carton. It is quick to pack and looks good on a shelf as well as in the mail.
A roll end tuck front gives a mailer-style lid that lifts open. It creates a small reveal moment, even on a compact box.
Tuck flaps on boxboard hold firmly because the board springs back slightly. That helps small boxes stay closed without tape.
A side loading tab lock suits flat items such as cards or chocolate bars. See our side loading tab lock mailers for how that closure works.
Deciding if boxboard is strong enough
Boxboard has less crush strength than corrugated. Run through these checks before you commit.
When in doubt, send us the product and how you plan to ship it. We will tell you honestly if boxboard is the wrong board for the job.
- Weigh the product. Very light items are a natural fit.
- Check if it is fragile. Glass needs an insert or a corrugated box.
- Decide how it ships. Boxboard on its own can travel by mail for small items.
- For heavier or fragile goods, plan to send the boxboard box inside a poly mailer or outer carton.
- If the box must survive rough handling alone, switch to E-flute corrugated.
When to step up to corrugated
If your product is heavy, has sharp edges or contains glass, boxboard may bow or dent on the way. Corrugated adds a cushioning layer that boxboard does not have.
Many brands use both. A boxboard retail box holds the product, and a corrugated mailer carries it through the post.
That two-layer setup costs a little more per order. In return, the retail box arrives looking perfect, which matters for gifting and resale.
Our custom corrugated mailer boxes are the next step up when you need more protection.
Finishes that look best on boxboard
Because the surface is so flat, boxboard shows finishes at their best. Foil edges are crisp, and embossing holds fine detail.
Soft-touch lamination on SBS gives a smooth, premium feel that suits beauty and jewelry. Spot UV over matte lets a logo catch the light.
Aqueous coating is a lighter option if you want to keep the paper feel, especially on kraft board.
Keep finishes simple on very small boxes. One accent reads better than three on a box the size of a lipstick.
Embossing works best on 20 or 24 pt board. Thinner sheets can show the raised shape through on the inside panel.
Artwork tips for small paperboard boxes
Small boxes leave little room for text. Keep the front panel to your logo and product name, and move details to the sides or inside.
Thin fonts print sharply on boxboard, which is an advantage. Still, keep body text readable and avoid tiny reversed type on dark backgrounds.
Barcodes and ingredient lists fit well on side panels. Check the proof at actual size, since small text that looks fine on screen can feel cramped in hand.
Our mailer box artwork and design guide covers bleed, safe zones and file setup.
Storage, packing and shipping
Boxboard ships flat and takes up very little storage space. It folds by hand in seconds, which helps on busy packing days.
Store it flat and dry. Paperboard can curl in damp rooms, and curled board is harder to fold neatly.
Fold a few boxes ahead of a busy day and stack them open side up. Pre-folded boxboard nests neatly and saves time when orders spike.
If you ship many small items, our custom small mailer boxes page shows other board options for compact orders.
Proofs, production and delivery
You get a free digital proof and unlimited revisions before anything prints. Paperboard runs come off press 4–6 business days after approval.
Check the proof for fold lines running through text or logos. On small boxboard panels, a few millimeters makes a visible difference.
Flat stacks travel free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia in 2–3 business days. Any misprinted or damaged boxboard reported inside 10 days gets reprinted or refunded.
If you are deciding between boxboard and a sturdier board, our chipboard mailer boxes offer another option with a different feel.
