Who switches to biodegradable mailers
Most buyers on this page are moving away from plastic poly mailers or foam-lined boxes. They want a package customers can put in the paper recycling bin.
Clothing labels, zero-waste shops, refill brands and natural skincare makers order these most often. Many of them already promise low-waste shipping on their website.
Your box needs to keep that promise. That means paying attention to every part of the package, not only the board.
Some customers also share unboxing photos online. A plain paper box with a clean print shows your values without a long explanation.
What the board is made of
The box is made from paper fibers formed into corrugated board or solid paperboard. There is no plastic layer built into the board itself.
Corrugated comes in E-flute at 1.5 mm or B-flute at 3 mm. Solid kraft paperboard at 18–24 pt suits small, light items such as jewelry or socks.
Board choice drives most of the weight and protection. Pick the thinnest board that keeps your product safe, since extra board adds bulk without helping the customer.
If you are unsure which to pick, read our comparison of corrugated and paperboard mailer boxes before you request a quote.
Recyclable where facilities accept it
Paper-based board is curbside recyclable in many areas. Acceptance depends on the local program, so we never promise that every town will take it.
Heavy grease, food residue or large plastic labels can stop a box from being accepted. Keep those away from the board if recycling matters to you.
We make no third-party environmental claims for this product. If a retail contract asks for a specific eco label, ask us before ordering and we will tell you what we can supply.
Tell your customers to flatten the box and remove any plastic tape. Those two steps help the box move through sorting lines.
Choices that keep the package paper-based
Lamination adds a thin plastic film over the print. It looks great, but it works against a paper-only package.
The table shows the swaps we suggest when the goal is a box that stays paper-based from outside to inside.
You do not have to make every swap at once. Many brands start with the box and insert, then change void fill and tape when old stock runs out.
| Part of the package | Common plastic option | Paper-based swap |
|---|---|---|
| Surface finish | Gloss or soft-touch lamination | Aqueous coating or no coating |
| Insert | Foam tray | Die cut paperboard or corrugated insert |
| Void fill | Air pillows or bubble wrap | Crinkle paper or tissue |
| Closure | Plastic packing tape | Tuck lid or paper tape |
| Branding | Vinyl sticker | Printed lid or inside print |
Kraft or white outer liner
Kraft liner shows the natural brown fiber. Many shoppers read that color as a sign of low-waste packaging before they even open the box.
White liner gives brighter color and sharper photos. It suits brands with pastel palettes or detailed illustrations that look muddy on brown.
Both liners are paper. The choice is about look and print quality, not about how the box is disposed of.
On kraft, we can print white ink first so your colors pop. See our custom printed kraft mailer boxes for examples of that style.
Printing without heavy coverage
You do not need to flood the whole box with ink. A one or two color logo on kraft often looks cleaner and uses less ink than full bleed print.
Inside printing is a good place for a short note on how to recycle the box. A clear line such as "Flatten and place in paper recycling where accepted" works well.
Our step-by-step mailer box design guide explains bleed, safe zones and how to set up white ink.
Fewer colors can also mean fewer proof rounds. A simple one-color mark is quick to approve and easy to reorder later.
How to plan a paper-based mailer
Planning in this order prevents a late switch back to plastic parts.
Skipping a step usually means paying for a box that needs plastic fill or tape later. Following the order keeps the whole package consistent.
- Weigh and measure the product you ship most often.
- Pick the lightest board that still protects that product.
- Choose kraft or white liner and decide on print coverage.
- Replace lamination with aqueous coating or leave the board uncoated.
- Add a paperboard insert if the item moves inside the box.
- Approve the free digital proof, then we print and ship.
Wording to avoid on your box
Environmental claims on packaging can mislead customers if they are too broad. Keep your wording specific and accurate.
Plain facts build more trust than big promises. Say what the board is and what to do with it after use.
Our eco-friendly mailer box range uses the same careful approach to claims.
- Do not print an eco logo or seal you have not been granted.
- Avoid saying the box breaks down in a set number of days.
- Avoid "100% recyclable everywhere", since local programs differ.
- Do say what the box is made of and how to dispose of it.
Closures and tape decisions
A roll end tuck front mailer locks shut without tape for many light items. That keeps plastic tape off the box entirely.
A tear strip makes opening easy, and the box can still be flattened for recycling. If you need a sealed closure, paper tape is a simple swap.
For heavier goods, look at our ear lock mailer boxes with locking tabs, which hold the lid more firmly.
Self seal strips use an adhesive liner that peels off. They are handy for returns, but tell us if you want to avoid that liner.
Production, shipping and returns
Paper-based mailers are made in 4–6 business days from the day you approve the proof. Delivery is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia and takes 2–3 business days.
Boxes ship flat in cartons, so they store easily until you need them. Fold one up as soon as they arrive and test it with your product.
Store unused boxes somewhere dry. Paper-based board absorbs moisture, and damp board loses stiffness before it ever reaches a customer.
If any of the board arrives misprinted or damaged, flag it within 10 days and we reprint or refund it. When you are ready, request a quote for paper-based mailers and we will reply with options.
