A box your members will see every month
A one-off customer sees your box once. A subscriber sees it twelve times a year, and that changes how you should plan it.
The box becomes a signal. When it lands on the doorstep, members should know who it is from before they read the label.
That calls for a strong, consistent outer design. The surprise belongs inside, in the products and the insert, not in a new box every month.
Consistency also keeps costs and stock simple. One base box ordered in volume is easier to manage than twelve separate designs.

Subscription models we make boxes for
Every subscription has its own rhythm and its own mix of contents. These are the models we see most often.
Tell us yours and the typical contents of a cycle, and we size the box around the largest likely month.
Gift subscriptions deserve a mention too. When a member buys for someone else, the first box doubles as gift wrap. The print has to work without a note.
- Monthly snack, coffee and tea clubs
- Beauty and skincare sample boxes
- Book clubs and reading boxes
- Craft, hobby and activity kits
- Pet treat and toy boxes
- Quarterly seasonal or collector boxes
Planning a subscription box launch
Launches have more moving parts than a normal packaging order. Work through these steps so the box is ready before your first shipping day.
Build in a buffer. Subscribers forgive a lot, but a late first box sets the tone for the whole membership.
- List the contents of your first three cycles.
- Measure the bulkiest cycle with any wrap or tissue.
- Decide on a fixed insert or an open tray.
- Send your logo and design ideas for a free proof.
- Approve the proof and allow 4–6 business days for production.
- Allow 2–3 business days of transit before your packing day.
Inside the lid: where the story lives
Subscribers open the box expecting something new. Lifting the lid, members see its underside before anything else. That makes it prime space for a message.
Brands use it for a welcome line, a theme name or a QR code that links to the month's guide. Inside printing is available in full color or Pantone.
A printed insert card under the lid can change every cycle while the box print stays the same.
Some brands print a numbered grid inside the lid, one square per month. Members tick off each box, which quietly encourages them to stay.
Our unboxing experience guide covers how to stage each layer for the opening moment.
Inserts and dividers for curated contents
Curated boxes often mix sizes, such as a jar, two sachets and a small tool. Without dividers, the small items drift to the corners.
A paperboard tray with sections keeps each item in its place. Corrugated inserts add cushioning for glass jars or ceramics.
If your themes change a lot, an open tray with a single divider is more flexible than a fully fitted insert.
Fitted inserts make sense when one product appears every cycle, such as a signature jar or a pod pack. The rest of the space stays open for the changing items.
See the options on our mailer boxes with inserts page.
Board, closure and the opening
Most subscription boxes ship in E-flute corrugated at 1.5 mm. It protects mixed contents and holds a crisp printed surface after transit.
Heavier boxes, such as coffee clubs or book clubs, often move up to B-flute at 3 mm.
Weigh a fully packed sample of your heaviest cycle. That number tells us more than the product list does.
A peel-and-seal strip with a tear strip makes packing day faster and gives members an easy, clean opening. Ear lock styles hold the lid firmly for heavier cycles.
If you want a lid that tucks in from above, compare our tuck top mailer boxes.
Reorders that keep pace with your members
Subscription numbers grow and shrink, so ordering the right quantity takes some planning. Keep an eye on sign-ups ahead of each cycle.
Reorder before stock runs low. With 4–6 business days of production and 2–3 days in transit, two weeks of cover is a sensible buffer.
Because the base box stays the same, reorders are quick. The approved artwork is already on file.
Flat boxes store well, so many brands order several cycles at once to keep packing days calm.
Our shipping policy for packaging orders sets out transit times by country, which helps when members span several markets.
Matching the box to your category
A snack club, a beauty box and a book club have very different needs. The base box stays similar, but the details change.
Food and coffee clubs often prefer kraft board with white ink for a natural look. Beauty boxes lean toward white board with soft-touch lamination and foil.
Book clubs need flat, sturdy boxes that stop corners denting. Pet and hobby boxes take more knocks and benefit from B-flute walls.
Coffee pod clubs have a fixed product size, which makes fitted dividers practical. See our K-cup subscription boxes for that format.
Whatever the category, keep the outer artwork bold and simple. Members should recognize it at a glance from across a room.
Subscription box mistakes we help avoid
Most issues come from planning around one month instead of the whole year. Watch for these.
A quick review of your first three cycles against the proof catches most of them.
- Sizing for an average month and overflowing in a big one
- Changing the outer design so often that members stop recognizing it
- Fully fitted inserts that do not suit next month's products
- Ordering too late for a launch or a holiday edition
- No inside message, so the opening feels like any parcel
Starting your custom subscription boxes
Send your typical contents, member count and artwork. We return a free digital proof with the dieline, insert and inside print shown.
Revisions are unlimited, and shipping is free to the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
Once approved, the artwork stays on file. Every reorder after that starts straight at production.
Tell us your first shipping date as well. We plan the proof and production around it so the boxes arrive before packing day.
When your contents list is ready, request a subscription box quote and we will come back with options.
